Fertility, Pregnancy & Postpartum with Integrative Homeopathy
Updated: Oct 1
For over 200 years, homeopathy has been used as a gentle system of medicine throughout pregnancy, labour, and the postpartum period. Its strength lies in its ability to meet each person where they are, at any stage, during a time of profound change.
Preparing for Conception
Fertility is not only a physical process. Homeopathy works with this understanding, supporting the whole person rather than focusing solely on symptoms or diagnoses.
Whether you have endometriosis, PCOS/PMOS, low sperm count, or you’re simply struggling with infertility without clear answers, I’d encourage you to explore homeopathy with an open heart and mind.
You never know what might happen when you choose to explore something new, and how that one choice may change your world.
It takes up to 4 months for eggs to mature leading to ovulation, and sperm takes around 2-3 months to regenerate. With this in mind, some women/couples choose to focus on their health in the months before trying to conceive. I combine an integrative health approach alongside homeopathy; including nutrition, herbal medicine, and lifestyle support. The intention is to support hormonal balance and cervical mucus health, encourage regular ovulation, and improve sperm quality. Working on overall reproductive health for both partners over time. Liz Lalor’s fertility protocol forms the foundation of my approach, although I’ve adapted it slightly through my own experience and learning.
We’re also learning more about how important nourishment can be in the months before conception. Taking some time to look after your health before trying for a baby can be helpful for both partners. For women, this can support the body as it prepares for pregnancy, while for men, nutrition and overall health can also play a role in sperm quality.
Pregnancy places greater nutritional demands on the body than almost any other stage of life, second only to breastfeeding. Every meal is a way of giving your body the care it needs as it prepares to grow new life.
Supporting Each Stage of the Journey
Once pregnancy begins, the body is constantly adjusting and responding. The body goes through remarkable transformation. Organs are shifting and working twice as hard, energy is being redirected, and a new life is developing. Because of this, nutrition becomes especially important - for both mother and baby.
Taking homeopathic tissue salts during pregnancy is another wonderful support. Tissue salts help with the uptake and absorption of minerals, supporting both mother and baby through different stages of development.
For example:
*Calc Fluor 6x: helps to support the development of bones and the elasticity of connective tissue, and is often used to help prevent stretch marks during pregnancy.
*Mag Phos 6x: helps with digestion and can address muscle cramps, spasms, and other discomforts related to magnesium deficiency. For Baby: Supports muscle and nerve function development.
*Kali Phos 6x: this tissue salt can be added into the mix at any stage. It is great for fatigue and nerve strain. It can also be used during labour to keep energy levels up.

Along the pregnancy journey, it can be common for some women to experience symptoms like nausea, heartburn, constipation, varicose veins, or even anxiety. The great thing is that homeopathic remedies can help. Even in more vulnerable moments, there are remedies available. Common discomforts like backache, sleeplessness, fatigue, carpal tunnel can also be supported with homeopathy/flower essences. In certain situations, more specific support may be needed.
In cases of breech presentation, I’ve seen remedies work rather quickly - many times, being able to turn a baby within 48 hours of taking a remedy.
There are specific remedies that homeopaths can prescribe daily to help establish contractions naturally. I may use a low-potency combination when a little extra support is needed. It is equally important to help with the emotional side of things during this time.
Preparing for Labour
Labour can be as much an emotional and mental experience as it is a physical one. Feelings can shift rapidly, and each birth unfolds in its own way and pace. Homeopathy can be used during this process as well - whether easing fear and panic, or helping labour progress. Herbal preparations and flower essences can also offer comfort and grounding during this time as well.
Some Examples of Commonly Used Remedies
Aconite 200c - for fear/panic, anxiety, and restlessness before and during labour. Contractions feel violent and intense. This is a major remedy for a precipitous labour where contractions come on very suddenly. May fear she will not make it through childbirth and/or is convinced that she will die. Can be used for shocks of a fast birth which can be given to mother, father, and baby.
Chamomilla 200c - for intense pain and irritability, feeling angry or quarrelsome; doesn’t want anyone to fuss. A woman needing Chamomilla, may curse or demand things and then reject them or refuse help. It is a wonderful remedy for keeping the patient calm and collected during a long, hard labour or when the patient feels like she just "cannot endure the pain any longer". If the symptoms agree, it can be a very soothing remedy which will speed up the process.
Gelsemium 200c - The "I can´t do this" remedy. Trembling, chilly (especially in her back). Nervous. Feels better for peeing and voiding bowels. We can use this remedy if labour is sluggish and there is slowness in responses. When pains are normal, but the dilation is slow.
Nat Mur 200c - Can be useful for women who are worse for being observed. Prefers to be alone. Labour slows in bright lights & if there are lots of people around. Can be indicated when there is a failure to dilate. It can help a woman to “let go/surrender to the process.”
Some additional support…
Red raspberry leaf tea - has been used for centuries to support the body during pregnancy and childbirth
Bach flower essence - Olive - great for exhaustion
Abund Essence - for feelings of like you’re not good enough
Lavender and Frankincense essential oil - can be used in a diffuser during labour. Wonderful for calming and relaxing
Postpartum Care
This chapter is not only about caring for a beautiful newborn, but also about caring for mother (and father) as they settle into a new rhythm. Homeopathy can be especially helpful here - whether supporting healing after a caesarean, helping with the delivery of the placenta, or recovery after an episiotomy. It can assist with breastfeeding challenges and offer support during times of emotional sensitivity or overwhelm.
Arnica 200c can help heal bruised parts after labour, help with soreness and lameness after delivery. It will help to reduce inflammation of the genitalia after delivery and maintain healthy coagulation of the blood after delivery. It can also help with afterpains, particularly when the baby is at the breast.
Calendula 30c can help heal wounds or small cuts. It is also indicated for ruptures of the cervix and perineum during childbirth. This remedy can be taken for weeks until no longer needed.
Everyone’s journey is different, and there can be so many emotions along the way. Excitement, worry, hope, disappointment and everything in between. Wherever you are on your journey, I hope you find something here that is useful to you.
